MLive is searching for Michigan’s Best Donut! For the Muskegon/Lakeshore category, four local donut shops were nominated. So far, Morat’s Bakery and Goobers Bakery are the two leading contenders for that category. Mi Food Chronicles had a chance to sit down with Morat’s Bakery with the Muskegon Channel to discuss exciting future collaborations and Fall features. View full interview here.
Morat’s Bakery is launching unique donut features and introducing new concepts that have not been done before. Morat’s continues to push the envelope with new ideas and flavors. Dan Castle, co-owner of Morat’s Bakery stated that, “We have been reading that people are starting to look for unique and wild ideas. Today, we confirmed that we will be working with another locally owned business, and will create a mash up of donuts that Muskegon has not tasted before. This is a completely new approach to donuts.” Dan also mentioned another project where Morat’s will team up with a local brewery to bring a donut flavored beer.

Dan highlighted a couple new donuts and some of their classic contenders, “we have an interesting demographic, we have a very traditional demographic of all ages”. For those that love a traditional donut, Dan highlighted their classic Apple Fritter, which is about the size of your head and costs 99 cents. Two other popular traditional donuts are the plain cake and long john donut. Dan explains, “we also have another different demographic. For example, we make a pop tart donut. We take a full size pop tart and fry it inside of the donut, stuff the donut with a fruity flavor, then cover the donut with pop tart pieces.” There are about five to six different flavors that are sold on Saturdays.

In the future, make sure to be on the lookout for a couple new donut features. (Hint) One of these donut features will pair perfectly with the sounds of the Irish Music Festival. Well – maybe not this year because of COVID, but because of Irish-American Heritage Month.

Different in size compared to Morat’s Bakery, but don’t let these small donuts fool you. Goober’s offers a variety of pastries, breads, and cookies along with celebration cakes. They carry over 200 different craft sodas and a selection of other delicious items. In my opinion, Goober’s offers the BEST peanut butter frosted donut in Muskegon, maybe even Michigan. The texture of the dough is so light and flavorful while the frosting is a rich creamy peanut butter frosting. There is also something to be said about the glaze that they feature on their glazed raised, old fashion, and vanilla/chocolate cake donuts. Perfection. When placed on top of their donuts and muffins, the glaze just melts in your mouth, but is not too sweet that it over powers the donut flavor.

Let’s face it. I do not know a single person within my social circle that has not celebrated with a Ryke’s cake. The cakes, homemade buttercream frosting, and Butter Thin Cookies are still made from the original family recipe that started it all. Ryke’s has expanded by opening several storefront locations in Grand Haven and in Holland, Mi. They offer a full range of baked goodies, weekly soup and sandwich features, and delectable sides. If you are not a huge cake person, try their sugar cookies! The cookies are topped with homemade buttercream frosting and are typically topped with a fun decorative design on them. These definitely are a conversation starter!

Since 2017, the legendary bake shop has been owned by Diana Perez, who has continued on the Harris Hospitality legacy and has started her own. The Hodgepodge bakery may sound familiar if you live around Muskegon and the Lakeshore. Their famous sweet potatoe rolls can be found at The Deck, Pints and Quarts, and The Kirby House. Diana’s specialty is wedding cakes and making some of the most delicious donuts in Muskegon. Pictured above is Hodgepodge’s Maple & Bacon Donut. Typically, maple and bacon donuts only have a few slices/pieces of bacon on them. This donut is covered with delicious and fresh cooked bacon that is sprinkled on top of a moist vanilla cake donut. Hodgepodge just released a couple specialty fall features such as, pumpkin and cheesecake swirl muffins, apple cider donuts with cinnamon and sugar, and a pumpkin glazed cake donut. Not craving a donut? Hodgepodge offers a variety of breakfast sandwiches and lunch options.
